Back of book: Lots of men stray in a failing marriage And Joshua had good reason. After all, it was nearly a year since Joanna had denied him access to her bed and body. Yet it seemed only yesterday that their fragile love had shattered with the death of their only child. "I'm taking Angela to the States," he had stated coldly, "and you must find yourself a lover, too!" That he demanded a year away with someone else, and the same for Joanna, was hurtful. But the rekindling of desire between her and Joshua right before his departure troubled Joanna most of all . . . .

My review - The whole beginning section of the book just seemed so melancholy and perhaps that is what the author was going for since Joshua's and Joanna's marriage seemed to be so strained. The hero's point of view is not revealed here so it makes it a little harder to see where he is coming from. When they meet up she is only 17 and he, a doctor, is in his thirties. Of course she lies to him about her age and then she ends up getting pregnant. They marry and the child later dies of a blood disease. Joanna goes into a depression and it seems that Joshua either doesn't know what to do or how to help her. He offers up this separation instead of a divorce. He didn't want a divorce but a separation and he seemed to want to have an open marriage. He believes in his vows yet he states that he was sleeping with his secretary for 6 months. Joshua and Joanna sleep together one last time and she wakes up literally and figuratively. She wants to continue her marriage. She realizes she loves her husband and doesn't want him to go but he has already left.

Joshua is gone for a little over a year and comes back to find Joanna throwing a party at her flat and another man is there as though he is her lover. In fact, Dan even implies that they are seeing one another. Joshua and Joanna start working things out, truths are revealed and lies pushed to the side.

The Failed Marriage Carole Mortimer 9780373106752 Books Reviews

I was the cause of my marriage failing!!!
Didnt like the h at all. Okay she lost her child but she shut out the father as if it was all his fault. He suffered too. She doesnt let him have relationship with her and then is surprised that he is having an affair! Come one! What did she expect? He would continue to pine like she did! NO.
She came off as cold and cunning. Like she "trapped" him by lying to him about her age... No. I didnt like her at all.
The heroine gets pregnant by the much older hero when she's eighteen. They marry but then the baby dies. They struggle on with the marriage for five years, growing further apart. Then he announces that he's going to America for a year taking his mistress of six months with him. He advises her to take a lover herself.

I have read many books by this author, and have enjoyed lots of them. But this was miserable and depressing. What really got me was when the hero returned after spending a year in America he immediately came back into his wife's life. Why she didn't tell him to take a hike was beyond me. Glad that I paid pennies for this at the local charity shop was the only plus point.
Teenager falls for older man, makes a play for him , has sex and gets pregnant, he marries her, they have a child that later dies, she withdraws from him and the marriage breaks down, understandable , crap happens, the husband announces that he is leaving for the U.S for a year , okay, he is taking his lover, who is his secretary with him , and in the meantime wifey is not allowed to divorce him, but she is free to find her own lovers, alrighty then , now we are in the twilight zone,it just made no sense to me, I mean at the point where a normal woman would be saying, "you've been having an affair with your secretary ?, and you want to take her to America, for a year ?", 'well, bless your heart dear, now how do you load this stupid shotgun?' , (pant, pant), 'will you', (pant , pant), 'just stand still for a minute now?' this woman just takes it calmly and faced with the obligatory rape scene, decides that she really loves her..... , (rhymes with curd) of a husband, I know that this was written almost 30 years ago, but come now, on a little backbone here please, all I can say is , wow, thank God, harlequin has come a long way from this sort of nonsense
This is another HP book where all is not what it seems. Yes Joshua married Angela because she was pregnant. And yes she was not even 17 when they met and he was in his 30s. But in true HQ fashion all is not lost. This is a story where each kept secrets of love from the other and he left for a year. This was after they had been married and lost their child. She had shut down her emotions. Communication would have worked but there was none at the time. I enjoyed this book and will be rereading it again.
