This is a real gem of a book. For those who like an overlay of the strange on the familiar, this one hits the sweet spot. In a near future where the United States is no more, and sovereign security companies protect and provide justice for their customers, Sam Turner is one of the lawmen competing for business. A British woman who retires to his jurisdiction in the Arizona Zone provides him a set of threats and puzzles that, intertwined with other plot threads leads to moral growth for some if not all the characters.

Sam is the ultimate Competent Man, determined to do the right thing the right way. The British Evie is well drawn. She is not the best of persons, and Thomas Sewell conveys that, but with sufficient subtlety to draw you into her fears over the dangers she faces. All the characters are well drawn, from the ex-Marine to the French immigrant to the corrupt police officer and the foot soldiers in the desert.

The book is a tension-filled page turner, but my favorite part was how well the workings of the security sovereignties played out. From a writing perspective, they were handled beautifully, well-described without a lot of dull information dumps. For what they were, they were well thought out contractual arrangements whose many nuances and implications were well explored. Kinda loved 'em.

This is tightly focused science fiction, where you see the larger society through a lense that focuses on the events surrounding only a small group of people over only seven days in the desert. I highly recommend it.

Set mainly in Maricopa, Arizona Zone, this is a book that combines traces of the old world and the new world. In Maricopa, there lays a well established security company firm owned and operated by Sam Harper. Here is where Evie's character is stalked and terrorized by an unknown assailant. Evie hires Sam to protect her and help her find out why she is being stalked. This science fiction thriller is jammed packed with action, cool technological gadgets, danger, and suspense.

This book is fast paced, and there are quick shifts in character viewpoints that will keep you guessing where the book is headed. You'll find yourself enjoying the bits of humor and the various characters. This is a good book to read if you are in the mood for a quick moving science fiction thriller.
Great story, even though it's set in the future with fictional rules governing their conduct, it's not so far fetched and the story makes you believe it's actually possible. Love the story line and twists.
It all starts with a huge botched job Evie's supposed first field assignment ends in a heartbreaking disaster, and it's something that effectively sets the tone for the rest of the novel. If that does not rend you into the book's increasingly complex and deeply engaging plot, then I don't know what will. Then merely a few pages into the book, you'll immediately find yourself in the middle of a brewing international intrigue--although "international" in this sense consists largely of the newly founded city states. But still. And the deeper you get into reading the book, the more your sense of intrigue grows until it begins to hurt who has been making Evie's life hell, and what is the worst he's willing to do? I'll stop right here before I give out spoilers.

I love how Sam Harper's competencies and personal strengths are presented in a balanced way here--he's someone you will root for, and somehow Sam keeps reminding me of Clint Eastwood's most famous movie character, the lone invincible gunslinger against massive, albeit invisible, evil. He is, in a word, "awesome."

And perhaps most importantly, the entire edge-of-your-seat action takes place in more or less a week--the limited time frame adds more gravitas to the story's conflicts and resolution as you also feel it in your guts that a solution must be found or it's all or nothing. You will not be able to put the book down, especially in those parts where Evie is being attacked and everyone's wondering who's doing what.

`Sharper Security' is a hugely enjoyable read. It is set in the near future, and as such, you'll find gadgets and technologies representing reasonable extrapolations of what we currently have. But these are just trappings to the book's deeper vitality. Thomas Sewell's writing is crisp, spot-on, and never pretentious. As a character, Sam Harper, I believe, has several more novel sequels in him, as he's someone so reminiscent of a near-future Alex Cross.

I give this book the five stars it deserves.
It was hard to get into the book at the beginning. I felt confused as to what was going on. However, my sticking with it paid off and I found myself thoroughly enjoying as the book progressed. It shows an interesting new world - one with private security companies instead of governments and with private roads and courts. I hope the author ends up publishing a sequel.
It's hard to imagine the United States being separate territories, while still functioning somewhat efficiently, but this author has a pretty good version of what it could look like. There was enough of a mystery, characters were interesting and there was enough action and tension. Maybe it was a bit longish, IMHO, and I didn't really get all that emotionally involved with the story. But it was OK while I was reading it.
Finally! Another future-history book that incorporates the concepts that were first brought to the forefront of libertarian ideology by David D. Friedman's Machinery of Freedom. Those who have read Machinery of Freedom and agree with the premises laid out by it will be happy to see more fictional works that incorporate its ideas. If you enjoyed Vernor Vinge's "The Ungoverned," you will enjoy this book as well.

I am looking forward to sequels to document the mechanics of Sam Sharper's future plans and I hope to see prequels that document the Big Split.
